Can You Provide Toughened Mirror Glass?
Yes, we can! Many designers, architects, and contractors are surprised to learn that we offer toughened mirror glass.

At Rough Old Glass, our process begins with clear or body-tinted transparent glass, which is cut to size and polished or bevelled at the edges. When required or specified, the glass is toughened before being hand-silvered to create toughened antiqued mirrors.

It’s important to note that standard mirrors cannot be toughened. However, we can silver toughened panels with a 'Clean Silver' finish to create toughened mirrors without distressing. Due to the handcrafted nature of our silvering process, some small blemishes or shading may occur.

Why Use Toughened Mirror Glass?
Toughened mirror glass is essential in certain applications to ensure durability and safety:

  • Heat Resistance: Toughened glass can typically withstand temperatures up to 250–300°C (482–572°F), making it ideal for use behind heat sources, such as AGAs or fireplaces.

  • High Impact Resistance: It is at least four times stronger than annealed glass, though care should still be taken with edges and corners during installation.

  • Commercial Applications: Toughened mirror glass is often the only acceptable material in high-traffic public spaces, such as airports, or in other commercial environments.

Additional Benefits:

  • Toughened mirror glass is crucial in preventing cracks when panels or tiles are used behind heat sources or where socket cutouts are required.

  • It complies with British Standards BS EN 12150, ensuring quality and safety.
